Uzume came to us on the 15th March 2023, from our good friends at Toboetsuki Hokkaido Ken. We had always planned to add another female to our house, especially after Momo was diagnosed with health issues. However, she was a complete surprise puppy, because we had no idea her parents could produce black and tan puppies! When her mother, Satsuki, whelped at 2am, myself and Lindsey were completely shocked to find that Satsuki had two white girls and a surprise black and tan! Uzume is a truly special girl.
Uzume, to start with, was quite a shy puppy. She wasnt easily spooked, but she was cautious and tended to investigate things last. However, she has now grown into a big bundle of fun, and she is friendly with strangers and other dogs. She has retained her mother’s laid-back persona, and definitely inherited her father’s cheekiness! Uzume is the kind of dog who will go into any situation thinking its really fun, and then worry about it later. she is outgoing and a very brave, girl. She enters new situations with ease!
During her first few months, we worked heavily on socialisation. This meant, attending puppy classes, and simply taking her wherever she could go, such as cafes, pubs, supermarkets, standing by busy roads, shops; You name it, we went there! We dont let many people or dogs say hello at this age, as the aim of socialising is to experience the world, and its smells and sounds. This creates a well-rounded dog who is not worried about their environment. We always socialise our dogs within 48 hours of coming home, even if they cant go for walks yet. We believe it crucial to get dogs out as soon as possible, even if that means carrying them in your arms.
We have also attended numerous handling sessions with Uzume at the Vets. Our vets uses a fear-free approach, and although she is not afraid of the clinic at all (in fact she LOVES it), we wanted to experience handling sessions with her, so she learns that good things always happen at the vets (and gets fed lots of chicken when shes there!). Going to the vets can be fun for dogs providing you desensitise them to the process. We shouldn’t expect our dogs to tolerate the poking and prodding at the vets without prior training. We have worked on everything from sitting on the scales, to tolerating eye exams, to tolerating blood sampling, and so much more. She is even going to be featured in some CPD for Vet nurses on how to do ‘Fear Free Handling Sessions’!
We are so proud of Uzume and who she had grown up to be, and we cannot wait to continue this amazing journey with this naughty and incredibly fun little dog!
