Hokkaido Ken should always have health tests prior to any breeding. This includes (but not limited to) DNA tests for Collie Eye Anomaly (this can be done by a blood sample, or a cheek swab), DNA tests with Embark (or other canine breed profiles) to check for coefficiency of breeding, coat traits that the animal carries, amongst many other things. They should also have an eye exam done by a registered veterinary body of your country, here in the UK we use BVA eye tests (British veterinary Association) and a certificate is issued. They should also have hip scoring done by a veterinary association, again the UK uses BVA hip scheme. You can view a full list of the potential health issues of Hokkaido Ken in our ‘Health’ section.
